The Engines

Delphi/Turbo Programming Links
Delphi/ Turbo Database Components

This site is up to date and maintained and is a vendor neutral guide listing database engines, components and programming links for Borland Delphi, Kylix, and C++ Builder as well as Turbo DelphiTurbo C++ Turbo Delphi for .NET, and  Turbo C#

The successor to the famous BDE Alternatives guide created by Kyle Cordes.

Need to pick a database engine? Want to search for precisely the features you want, SQL, full text indexing, blob compression, strong encryption... Wouldn't it that be an excellent job for COMPUTER PROGRAM driven by a database. Yes, indeed, it is. Soon, we'll be posting a database selection program- created using different engines listed on the site!

A word from your webmaster:

Welcome- I've been programming using BDE Alternatives since Delphi 1.0.  I have supervised or personally written over 35 commercial applications using Delphi to connect to databases including MS Access, BDE Paradox, BDE dBase, Interbase, DB Isam, Topaz, Absolute Database, MySql,  and others. I have also worked on custom projects that used Code Base, Flash Filer. Finally, I have also used applications that are based on InterBase, Firebird and Phoenix.

Of late the Borland language communities have lost several important sites, among them the Delphi Super Page; but, with the revival of the Turbo line, Borland languages (albeit not under that name) have been revitalized.

Now that .Net is real and Vista is on the way out to end users, many Delphi, Turbo Delphi, C++ Builder and Turbo C++ Builder, C# programmers will need to look into new engines. We are covering new technologies like dbExpress and BDP.

We will be implementing three new features as soon as we have reviewed all engines on the original site, and several new ones.

  • User reviews
  • Discounts- yup. We're going to speak to engine and component vendors about discounts. And we already have a special offer...
  • Components, Active X, Dot Net tools for database development.

This is a crucial junction for developers: with the imminent release of Microsoft Vista® to consumers, developers will need to develop strategies for the new OS.

The BDE, or Borland Database Engine®, has served the programming community well. In the original Microsoft Windows environment, Delphi® , and later C++®  and Kylix® , ran circles around other programming environments with best in market connectivity to the outstanding Paradox®  and dBase®  engines. And the support for SQL was, and still is, outstanding.

However, after flirting with Inprise®  branding, and releasing Interbase®  as an open source, the Borland language tools deprecated the BDE and now provide only local Interbase and an in-memory "briefcase." When you review our listing, you will see that we indicate whether or not the publisher of the engine has verified the listing.

Some of the listings are far more detailed than others; and I have praised some engines. Your mileage may vary.
