Free database engines

Introduction

Many database engines, both complex and simple, are available for free. "Free" varies from completely free at all times to free for student or not for profit applications and pay for others. This article lists engines that are either free, open source or both.

Because they're free, are they of lower quality?

NO! There are great database engines that are used in the most demanding applications that are free, and others that have very high charges that barely run. Many people don't understand that open source projects are used in commercial software projects ranging from single user to running governments.
